About Hickory

Hickory is a narrative concept I came up with to explore and apply different narrative techniques in game design. As part of a focus track at university, I created a narrative canvas, which focusses on the player experience, mechanics, and their narrative packaging on different game layers. Next to using techniques like the MDA or GFI frameworks, I also developed one game feature in more detail, as a representation of the narrative design. You can access both documents for respectively the narrative canvas and the quest board as a design representation at the bottom of the page.

Imagine a 3D platformer with fast paced responsive movement in combination with questing missions similar to the Monster Hunter series. Hickory aims to combine these core mechanics of their respective genre in a new way, creating unique gameplay within a challenging environment rich in secrets and obstacles. Take control off a little ChakaChaka named Hickory, that tries everything in its power to rebuild a tribe scattered by a natural disaster. Fighting off giant spiders or imperialistic ants is only a part of the struggle! Next to finding and bringing back lost members of the tribe, Hickory uncovers a strange prophecy that could spell doom for the entirety of its home tree and the eco-system it harbours.
